How we use baking soda differently in our Natural Deodorant

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a jack-of-all-trades type of ingredient. It can whiten your teeth, bake your cookies, relieve your heartburn and clean your sink (to name a few of its purposes).

Another one of its superpowers is keeping your underarms smelling fresh and squeaky clean in natural deodorants without using harsh chemicals. Baking soda is a fabulous alternative if you’re looking to stay stink-free without the worry of toxic ingredients like aluminum or parabens found in most non-natural deodorants. It's well known for its odor absorbing abilities, and studies have suggested it may also have anti-microbial properties, which is why it makes perfect sense to apply it to the funkiest places on your body.

Baking Soda in Deodorant, Explained

Baking soda is a type of salt, normally appearing in a white, fine powder form. Not to bring you back to 4th period science class or anything, but we have to revisit the concept of acids and bases real quick to explain baking soda’s effect on your body.

If you remember learning about the pH scale, you’ll recall that it ranges from an acidic 0 to a basic 14, with a 7 being neutral. Baking soda sits at a 9 on the scale, meaning it is more basic. Our skin usually falls somewhere between a 4.5-6.5, in the more acidic range.

When applied to the skin, the basic baking soda mixes with our skin’s acidic, oily protective layer (also known as the acid mantle) to neutralize our pH level, in turn helping to eliminate any odors it may have produced.
