Why Coffee Makes You Poop

In one end and out the other; coffee is the natural laxative that most of us know, love, and can’t live without. There is a reason that coffee is a staple in our morning routines, and visiting the porcelain throne promptly after that first cup actually has some science behind it. So, sit tight, grab a cup of joe, and let’s dive in!

Most people believe that the need to unleash right after your first cup of heavenly morning goodness is attributed to the caffeine found in coffee. However, we don’t have the same urge after we chug down a soda, so that helps to cancel out that myth. Even decaf coffee, for you naturally alert poo~pals out there, makes our trumpets sound, proving that it isn’t necessarily the magical caffeine bean causing disruption. Thanks to some rather invasive studies, scientists have narrowed the bowel blasting phenomenon to an over stimulated distal colon, which helps push our wicked waste out of our bodies more quickly.

My workday is a constant struggle between my desire for coffee and my fear of pooping at work

Mix that active distal colon cannon with the acidity found in our daily brew, and you have a recipe mixed for bathroom bliss. Chlorogenic acid is another compound found in coffee and it triggers higher stomach acid, and also a higher production of gastric acid. Other natural chemicals found in coffee are theophylline and xanthine; these components aid the gastric acid and get our rears in gear for our early morning, standing appointment with the loo.

So now that we know mixing early mornings, breakfast, and coffee will up the likelihood of a java-bowel-joust, we can be prepared for the next big show. Thanks to the odor eliminating help of Poo~Pourri, the original before-you-go toilet spray, we can rest easy in our dutiful morning routine. After all, coffee may be the devil's bathroom advocate, but you have a secret weapon
